Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Biography
Who is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ?
Progressive Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar and other Democratic members of Congress were arrested outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday in protest of the repeal of Roe v. Wade.
Ocasio-Cortez was seen walking escorted by police with her hands clasped behind her back, as if she were handcuffed, but she wasn’t. At one point, she uncrossed her hands and raised her fists at the other protesters.
Omar was also seen in footage of her walking alone with her hands clasped behind her back as if she were handcuffed, even though she was not.
Arrested and Charged
Other members seen being detained by officers include Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y., Jackie Speier, D-Calif., Sarah Jacobs, D-Calif. , Katherine Clark, D-Mass., Andy Levin, D-Mich., Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., Madeleine Dean, D-Pa., Jan Schakowksy, D-Ill., and Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-Calif.
Abortion rights protesters have rallied outside the Supreme Court nearly every day since Roe’s overturn in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization in June.
A total of 34 arrests, 16 of them members of Congress, were made at Tuesday’s rally, according to Capitol Police.
About two dozen members of Congress were protesting outside the high court when police told them through a megaphone that they were engaging in “illegal demonstration activity.” “Cease and desist or you will be arrested,” police warned.
“It is against the law to block traffic, so the police will give three standard warnings before they start making arrests,” Capitol Police tweeted before the incident.
“I was just arrested at the Supreme Court protesting the horrendous reversal of Roe v Wade. This is the time to stand up, speak up, and not shy away from the pursuit of justice and equality,” Maloney wrote on Twitter after the arrest.
‘The Supreme Court will not stop us. Although we were arrested, we will not stop organizing, agitating and legislating for justice. We got each other,” Rep. Cori Bush wrote on Twitter.
After the Supreme Court overturned Roe and sent the abortion decision back to the states and Congress, Ocasio-Cortez called on pro-choice advocates to take to the streets to express their outrage over the ‘illegitimate’ decision of the court.
Late last month, he suggested conservative justices should be impeached and blasted his own party for having a “weak strategy” to fight Republican efforts to restrict abortion.
‘The Supreme Court has dramatically overstepped its authority. We had two conservative senators in the United States Senate, Senator Manchin and Senator Collins, come up with a very explosive allegation that they were misled by multiple Supreme Court justices during their confirmation hearings and in the run-up to confirmation.” Ocasio-Cortez said on NBC News’ Meet the Press.
‘There must be consequences for such a deeply destabilizing action and a hostile takeover of our democratic institutions. To allow that to remain is to allow it to happen.
