A jealous thug who stabbed his ex-partner to death in their home while their three children were at the home has been jailed for life.

Alex Staines, 30, stabbed Christie Frewin, 25, in a horrific knife attack at her home in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, around 9:20 a.m. M. From January 27.

Staines, who was later charged with murder and possession of a sharp item, stabbed Ms. Frewin a total of 17 times in what was described in court as a “frenzied and murderous” attack.

Yesterday, she pleaded guilty to murder and having a sharp item and was told that she would have to serve a minimum sentence of 22 years before he could be considered for parole.

How old is Alex Staines?

She is 30 year old.

Alex Staines was out on bail for an assault on Ms. Frewin in January 2021

The judge said Ms. Frewin ended her relationship in 2018, but noted that Staines had once told her that he would kill her and her children.

Judge Kay said Staines had been jealous of any new man in his life.

Due to her harassment of her, Ms. Frewin came to the notification from the authorities and was provided with a secure emergency mobile phone to call and ask for help if she felt at risk from Staines.

In January 2021, Staines was out on bail for an assault on Ms. Frewin.

Attacked

The court heard that on the morning of January 27, Staines arrived at Ms. Frewin’s home at 8.25 a.m. and was seen entering, only to leave six minutes later.

Staines attacked Ms. Frewin, almost immediately after entering her home with a large kitchen knife, a court heard.

Five of the wounds were on her face, six wounds were inflicted on her neck and there was also a cut on her throat.

Staines, who turned himself in to police later that morning at Hatfield Police Station, also inflicted fatal wounds on his wrist and arm, where he had a tattoo of his name.

Upon jailing him, Judge Michael Kay QC told Staines: “Christie was very young when you met her and, over the years, you have exercised coercive abuse and control over her.”

The judge said Ms. Frewin had ended her relationship in 2018, but noted that Staines had been jealous of any new boyfriend in her life.

“You believed that she had no right to lead her own life,” the judge told Staines.

Prosecutor Martin Mulgrew said it was clear in the hours before the attack, Staines had devised a “serious plan” to harm her ex-partner and her children “because she had been talking to other men.”

After stabbing Ms. Frewin, Staines left the house and made at least two phone calls, including one to her father, but in neither did she tell anyone that the children were alone in the house with her mother.

They were discovered when someone who was concerned about Ms. Frewin’s well-being called her mobile phone, which was answered by one of the children who raised the alarm.

The court heard that Staines physically and emotionally abused Ms. Frewin after entering into a relationship with her in 2013.

Death

The day before her death, Staines spoke to a friend of the young mother and told her that she would not have her ‘baby mother’.

Mulgrew said that in the hours that followed, Staines began making preparations for what he was going to do, leaving part of his property with another girlfriend and asking a friend to take care of his dog.

Judge Kay jailed Staines for life and told him that he would have to serve a minimum sentence behind bars of 22 years and 58 days before he could be considered for parole.

He said it was not known for sure whether the children had witnessed the murder of his mother, but said it was likely that they heard his screams.

Staines was told that when he is released he will be on leave for the rest of his life.

Following Ms. Frewin’s death, her family paid tribute to the ‘kindest’ and ‘loving’ mother who ‘always put on the bravest face for her three most beautiful children’.

In a statement, her family said: ‘Christie had so many amazing qualities. She was the sweetest, kindest, most loving sister, daughter, and mother to her children that we could have asked for.

We always had each other in everything. She loved so much and no matter what Christie faced, she always put on the bravest face for her three most beautiful children.

‘I feel robbed and gutted. She was so strong and I hope she is only remembered for the brave and gentle soul that she was hers. She is truly loved and missed.

‘I love you forever and ever, girl. Until we meet again, princess.

Detective Inspector Justine Jenkins, who led the investigation, said: ‘Our thoughts remain with Christie’s family and friends in what remains an extremely difficult time for them.

Prosecutor Martin Mulgrew said it was clear in the hours leading up to the attack, Staines had devised a “serious plan” to harm her ex and her children “because she had been talking to other men.”

The court heard that on the morning of January 27, Staines, armed with a large kitchen knife, drove to Ms. Frewin’s home in Lady Grove and stabbed her 17 times in a “frenzied and murderous” attack.

She was found dead on the ground with her children near her.

Staines turned himself in at the Hatfield Police Station that morning.

Family

Judge Kay said it was not known whether the children had witnessed their mother’s murder, but said they likely heard her screams.

In a statement, Ms. Frewin’s family said: “We want people to remember Christie as a beloved mother, sister and daughter.

“We don’t want people to forget her and we know that the loss we feel is felt more widely than just her family, her friends, and the larger community around us.”

The family also expressed disappointment at “what we consider leniency in Alex Staines’ sentencing and we have discussed with the CPS [Crown Prosecution Service] raising our concerns with the Attorney General to review the sentence.”

The Hertfordshire County Council had requested reporting restrictions that would have prevented social services from publishing and police involvement in domestic violence reports for many years.
