According to the Jersey Journal, the girl is said to have just delivered the baby with the umbilical cord still attached when she walked into El Patron restaurant in Jersey City and asked for help. The girl reportedly gave the newborn to a customer and left the facility.

Surveillance cameras filmed the ordeal on Wednesday. Customer Alease Scott told WABC that she was having dinner with her boyfriend at El Patron when a teenager asked for help with a baby. Scott said she asked the teenager if she could check the baby’s vital signs.

The teenager reportedly left the restaurant when she Scott checked on the baby, who according to Scott appeared to be having trouble breathing. According to WABC, the police responded to the scene with oxygen and medical equipment for the baby.

“When I put the oxygen mask on the baby, we suddenly heard the most beautiful cry and the baby began to move. She opened her eyes a little and then closed them, but the cutest thing was when she was hungry and tried to suck on the oxygen mask so we would know that she would be fine afterward, “Scott told the news agency.

The Journal reported that police eventually located the teenager, who initially denied being the baby’s mother. The teenager and baby were hospitalized and are doing well.

The baby will reportedly be put up for adoption and the 14-year-old is not expected to face criminal prosecution.

In New Jersey, Safe Haven laws allow a parent (or someone acting on their behalf) to drop off a baby under the age of 30 in an emergency room, police station, fire station, ambulance, first aid station or rescue team without it. Questions are questioned. The State Ministry of Children and Families will place the child in an adoptive or foster home.
