Patricia Williams Alcee Hastings
The closure of the House Ethics probe was first reported by Roll Call and Politico.
Williams represented Hastings, then a federal judge, when he faced prosecution in the 1980s on charges that he accepted a bribe in exchange for a lenient sentence and the return of assets owned by a pair of brothers convicted of racketeering in his courtroom.
Hastings put Williams on his congressional payroll and paid her a large salary, according to figures compiled through LegiStorm. Williams had earned nearly $3 million in taxpayer-funded salary since 2000, LegiStorm figures show.
In 2017, Williams and Hastings bought a $700,000 home west of Boynton Beach, according to Palm Beach County property records. Hastings’ relationship with Williams has long drawn criticism, though the congressman has been dismissive of the notion that it was unethical or simply didn’t look good.

Congressman Alcee Hastings Impeachment
Hastings was impeached by the House in 1988 after being indicted on charges of solicitation of a $150,000 bribe from an FBI agent in a sting. A criminal trial in 1981 had resulted in a hung jury. The Senate convicted him and removed him from the bench, but that did not strip away his ability to hold elected office.
He was elected to the House in 1992, winning a total of 15 races.
His past impeachment sometimes got in the way of advancing in the chamber. After the 2006 House Democratic takeover, Hastings was in line to chair the House Intelligence Committee. But after Republicans elevated the issue, Speaker Nancy Pelosi passed him over, the Sun-Sentinel noted.
