Who is Ahmad Abu Marhia ?
Palestinian police have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of a man who was found beheaded in the occupied West Bank.
Ahmad Abu Marhia, 25, is understood to have been receiving death threats because of his s*xual identity.
A horrific crime scene video was widely shared on social media with many speculating as to the motive. Police said nothing is confirmed.
His body was discovered on Wednesday (October 5) in Hebron.
Ahmad Abu Marhia, 25, was found beheaded in the occupied West Bank.
LGBT groups in Israel said Ahmad Abu Marhia had spent the past two years living in Israel, where he was awaiting an asylum application to live abroad in Canada.
The same groups also said that he continued to receive death threats within the community where he lived.
It is currently unclear how he ended up in Hebron, a Palestinian city in the southern West Bank.
Israeli media have quoted friends of Abu Marhia as saying that he had been kidnapped.
Family
However, his family said that he visited Hebron regularly to visit them and work. They also said that the claims about the motive for his murder were rumours.
Homos*xuality is rejected in many parts of Palestinian and Israeli societies. About 90 Palestinians seek asylum in Israel because they identify as LGBT.
Natali Farah, herself an LGBT activist, told Israel’s Haaretz newspaper that Mr. Abu Marhia was well known and well liked within the LGBTQ community.
She said: ‘He was smart and calm. Many people knew him. The whole community is crying now.
“Everyone is scared,” she added.
The US ambassador to Israel, Thomas Nides, condemned the assassination. He tweeted that he was “shocked and horrified by the assassination and beheading of Ahmad Abu Murkhiyeh in Hebron.”
