Who is Adam Swellings?

Adam Swellings was the ringleader of a group of children who brutally attacked the father of three outside his Warrington home in 2007.

Swellings, who was 19 at the time, was sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of murdering him, along with Jordan Cunliffe, then 16, and Steven Sorton, then 17.

Cunliffe and Sorton have since been paroled, while Swellings, whose minimum 17-year sentence ends in 2024, remains in prison.

Death

Garry Newlove was beaten to death outside his Warrington home in 2007 by a gang of young men.

It has been reported that, in preparation for this, he has made an offer to move to an open prison, where he will be under less stringent restrictions.

According to the Mirror, the murderer’s case was already heard by the Parole Board on Monday, and a decision is expected in a few days.

The Parole Board said: “Adam Swellings’ parole review has been referred to us by the Secretary of State for Justice and is following standard processes with a decision expected in April.”

Attack

The attack shocked the nation, with particular attention drawn to the fact that two of his killers were drunk and underage at the time.

The Warrington resident came out of his house and reprimanded the three teens for vandalizing cars on his street.

They subsequently attacked him, repeatedly punching the 47-year-old and kicking him in the head ‘like a football’.

The brutal assault was witnessed by Newlove’s 12-year-old daughter Amy, while his wife Helen found him with a bloody sneaker print on his head.

Charged

Two other teenagers were acquitted of all charges.Helen Newlove, Garry’s wife, pictured at a press conference after the teenagers were found guilty of her murder. She would later be named her partner for her campaign work on juvenile delinquency.
Sorton and Cunliffe have been transferred from closed prison, and Swelling hopes to do the same.

Cunliffe’s transfer to open prison in 2020 sparked controversy when the Parole Board approved the move and threw a drunken party in her cell to celebrate her upcoming release.

This prompted then-Attorney General Robert Buckland to declare that there was no “entirely acceptable reason” for this move and Cunliffe was ordered to remain in a “closed” prison until his next parole hearing.

He was finally paroled in September of that year, but the Secretary of State appealed the decision, which was dismissed by the courts.
