Most of his victims were in the US and the CPS and NCA worked with the FBI and the Department of Justice in the US to build the case against Elahi.

His mobile phone and his computers were seized and examined by a coroner, leading investigators to uncover his crime on an “industrial scale.”

Investigation

Tony Cook, NCA CSA Chief Operating Officer, said: “The investigation team has been appalled by Elahi’s sadistic depravity and stunned by the industrial scale of her crime around the world.

Elahi sought sexual gratification by having power and control over his victims and showed no empathy for them.

He often goaded them to the point of wanting to commit suicide.

‘The effects on the victims in this case will continue for the rest of their lives.

“ I congratulate the victims for their courage and urge anyone who experiences abuse online to report it. Help is available.

Sadly, there are many criminals like Elahi who mask their real identities with compelling characters to exploit children and adults alike.

“I urge parents to talk to their children about who they communicate with online and what they share.

‘People need to understand that these offenses can happen to anyone.

Our investigation has sparked a number of other inquiries into Elahi’s associates and work is underway to bring others to justice.

“We thank our international partners, especially the FBI, for their support in this case.”

Sophie Mortimer from the Revenge Porn helpline said: ‘We have been working with the National Crime Agency to remove content online on behalf of victims for over 18 months.

“We have managed to remove thousands of images but there are more prominent ones and this work will continue for many more months.

This content is some of the most extreme that the Helpline has ever dealt with.

“It is not simply nudity or sexually graphic, it is violent, degrading and deeply damaging.

“The impact of sharing this content is devastating and life changing and should not be underestimated.”

Sarah Ingram, CPS Specialist Prosecutor, said: ‘The crimes that Elahi committed around the world were horrible and sadistic. He forced vulnerable children and women to engage in sexual activities and then blackmailed them for his own benefit.

“The scope of the crimes is almost unheard of. This level of depravity is shocking and will affect victims throughout their lives. I congratulate the victims for their courage and urge anyone who has been abused online to report it so that justice can be done, whether the crimes were committed in England or abroad.
