Who was Aaliyah Salazar?

Aaliyah Salazar, 14, was dancing with two other children when she was killed in a Colorado home on August 7.

Monte Vista Police responded to a call around 4:26 p.m. m. when they discovered that Aaliyah was unresponsive.

Emergency Medical Services arrived and later confirmed there were “no vital signs of life for the victim,” according to an affidavit.

It was later determined that she had been shot.

“She could walk into a store and go out with 20 new friends,” Aaliyah’s grandfather, Gary Salazar, tragically told KUSA.
She was just that kind of person. She loved the people and her family.”

On August 12, police said two underage girls and a 21-year-old man named Emiliano Vargas were arrested in connection with her death.

Investigation

Investigators discovered that Aaliyah was filming TikTok videos with her friends before she was shot.

Police discovered video immediately before the shooting that reportedly shows the victim dancing.

A suspect was seen in the background “playing with something on the bed,” the affidavit says.

One of the teens said it could have been “an accident,” KRDO TV reported.

Charged

The two minors were charged with involuntary manslaughter and possession of a weapon. They could face a maximum of six years in the Colorado juvenile system.

Vargas, who is the legal owner of the gun, is not believed to have been on the property when Aaliyah was shot.

Investigators said the gun was allegedly kept out in the open.

He now faces charges of providing a firearm to a minor, which is a class four felony in Colorado.

Family members have spoken out against the charges and do not believe the shooting was an accident.

“The frustration I have is that if you take a life, you should pay dearly for it, not by slapping your hand and saying don’t do it again,” Salazar said.

GoFundMe

A GoFundMe that began raising funds for Aaliyah’s headstone has raised more than $4,000.

A new district attorney is expected to review the case in September.
